"How long will a helium balloon last?" is the single most common question we get from event planners in Kent, and the honest answer is: it depends on the balloon material, whether it is treated, and the conditions in the room. The short version — untreated latex helium balloons float 6 to 12 hours, HI-FLOAT-treated latex lasts 2 to 5 days, and foil balloons last 3 to 7 days. The longer version is what this guide covers, because timing your order so the balloons look full exactly when guests walk in is the difference between a room that pops and one that has already started to droop.
Balloon Decor NW delivers and installs helium balloon decor across Kent, Renton, Auburn, Federal Way, Tukwila, and the rest of South King County. We treat every balloon that needs to last more than a few hours. Call 253.218.5790 or send us a message to time your order.
How Long Helium Balloons Last by Type
Helium escapes through the rubber walls of a latex balloon and through the seams of a foil balloon. The rate of escape — and therefore the float time — depends almost entirely on the material.
Untreated Latex Helium Balloons
A standard 11-inch untreated latex helium balloon floats for roughly 6 to 12 hours in normal indoor conditions. Larger balloons (16 to 18 inches) float longer because they hold more helium per unit of surface area. Smaller balloons (9 inches and under) float for less time — sometimes only 4 to 6 hours.
Untreated latex is the right choice only when the event is the same day and the balloons do not need to look full the next morning. For anything longer, treatment is required.
HI-FLOAT-Treated Latex Balloons
HI-FLOAT is a non-toxic, water-soluble coating sealed inside a latex balloon before it is inflated. It dries into a film that slows helium escape through the rubber. A HI-FLOAT-treated 11-inch latex balloon floats for 2 to 5 days, and larger treated balloons can last a week or more.
We treat every latex balloon destined for an event that runs longer than a few hours — a birthday party that starts in the afternoon, a corporate event that spans a full day, or a wedding reception that runs into the late evening. The treatment is invisible and does not change the look or feel of the balloon. For a deeper comparison of balloon materials, see our foil vs latex balloons guide.
Foil (Mylar) Helium Balloons
Foil balloons hold helium far longer than latex — typically 3 to 7 days, and sometimes up to two weeks. Foil does not need HI-FLOAT because the metallic film is a much better helium barrier than rubber. Foil is the right choice for:
- Multi-day displays and installations
- Numbers, letters, and shaped balloons
- Any decor that has to look full on day two
The trade-off is that foil cannot be shaped into organic garlands or arches the way latex can, which is why most of our installs combine the two. See our balloon garland Kent Washington guide for how the materials work together in a full installation.
What Shortens Helium Balloon Float Time
Five factors drain helium faster than the baseline numbers above:
- Heat. Helium expands and escapes faster as temperature rises. A balloon that lasts 10 hours at 68°F may last only 6 hours at 80°F.
- Direct sunlight. UV light degrades latex and accelerates helium loss. Balloons near a sunny window fade and shrink faster than those in shade.
- Humidity. High humidity can soften untreated latex slightly. The Pacific Northwest's moderate humidity is actually gentler on balloons than a hot, dry climate — but indoor humidity near a kitchen or a crowded room still has an effect.
- Altitude. Balloons inflated at sea level (Kent, Seattle) and transported to elevation expand and can pop. We inflate at the delivery location whenever possible.
- Over- or under-inflation. An under-inflated balloon floats poorly; an over-inflated one stresses the neck and leaks. Consistent, measured inflation is part of every professional install.
Pacific Northwest Conditions in Kent, WA
Kent sits at sea level with cool, moderately humid air for much of the year. Compared with a hot, dry summer climate, those conditions are relatively kind to helium balloons — float times tend to land on the longer end of the ranges above. The two things that most often cut float time short at Kent events are direct sun through large windows (common in event halls and hotel ballrooms) and warm, crowded rooms once guests arrive. We account for both when we time and treat your install. For events where helium is not an option at all, our balloon decor without helium guide covers air-filled alternatives.
How to Time Your Helium Balloon Order
The practical takeaway for anyone planning an event in South King County:
- Same-day event, untreated latex: inflate the morning of, or have us deliver the day of.
- Multi-hour or evening event: HI-FLOAT-treated latex, inflated the day of or the night before.
- Multi-day display: foil balloons, or treated latex sized up, installed a day ahead.
